Merina Breed

The Merino sheep breed is an autochthonous breed, but its hardiness has allowed it to be found on five continents, reaching one of the most important sheep populations in the world. Other outstanding qualities are its gregarious instinct and its resistance and easiness for long journeys.

The history of the Merino is closely linked to the history and economy of Spain due to its high specialization in wool production. It was exploited exclusively in Spain until the end of the 18th century, when the export of animals of this breed was allowed

The Official Catalogue of Livestock Breeds includes the Merino sheep breed in the Group of Autochthonous Breeds for Promotion.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

Exceptional wool as the breed’s hallmark. The Merina sheep stands out, above all, due to its high specialisation for the production of a unique wool. In this respect, the fleece is the element that best defines it, both for its length and density of fibres, and for the peculiar characteristics of these, related to fineness, waviness and uniformity. The Merino breed is also known for its high hardiness and ability to adapt to different environments.

These characteristics have allowed it to settle in all five continents. These and other qualities, as well as its interesting breeding behaviour, have made this breed the most important in the world, both for its census and for its participation in the formation of numerous important sheep breeds. It is an admirable animal that deserves to be preserved both for the products it offers and for its contribution to the development of livestock farming.

PRODUCTION CHARACTERISTICS AND EXPLOITATION SYSTEMS

This breed has traditionally been farmed extensively, based on transhumance to take advantage of the seasonal nature of the different grazing lands, favoured by the breed’s own characteristics (adaptability to the environment, easiness of management, gregarious instinct, high hardiness, etc.). This breed was mainly dedicated to wool production, but the low costs of this production in other countries and the introduction of synthetic fabrics have led to its reorientation to meat and milk production.

Wool production: highly specialised for its fleece, characterised by its great extension, density, fineness, uniformity, curl, resistance, and absence of dead hair and claw.

Meat production: produces high quality lambs with a carcass weight of between 12 and 17 kg, slaughtered at a very early age. And milk production: the milk obtained is used for the production of high quality cheeses, such as La Serena, Torta del Casar, Pedroches, etc.

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION

The distribution of this breed is wide, being present in more than 70% of the Spanish provinces. The main centres occupy the grassland areas of Extremadura and Andalusia and, to a lesser extent, Castile-Leon and Castile-La Mancha.
